Amidst political turmoil and deadlock, Maldives voted in its third democratic election on September 23, 2018. Opposition leader Ibrahim Solih secured 58.3 percent against President Abdul Yameen, a strongman politician who conceded defeat with 41.7 percent vote share.
Nepal has asked the United Nations to draw down its Department of Political Affairs in Nepal. The request was conveyed on the grounds that the “peace process” which began in 2006 has been achieved.
Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli concluded his six-day official visit to China on June 24, 2018. A total of eight MoUs were signed in the areas of hydropower generation, manufacturing, river training and agriculture.
The Communist Party of Nepal-Unified, Marxist and Leninist, the Nepal Communist Party-Maoist, and the Naya Shakti Party, formed an alliance for an upcoming election. However, the Naya Shakti party exited shortly after and aligned instead with the Nepali Congress party.
In a surprising move on May 12, 2017, just a day before the opening of the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, Nepal signed the framework agreement in Kathmandu. However, this has raised strategic apprehensions in India.
